FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the Complete Rucking Bundle

Rucking is the simple act of walking with a weighted backpack. Originally a military training staple, it has become one of the most popular and effective fitness workouts, burning up to 3x more calories than walking, building functional strength in your back, glutes, and core, all with low joint impact.
We recommend starting with roughly 10% of your body weight; for most people, that's a 10LB or 15LB weight. The goal is to challenge yourself while maintaining good posture for the full distance. Once you can comfortably cover 3 miles at a steady pace, consider stepping up to the next weight.
Once you can complete your regular ruck at a comfortable pace with good form, consider adding 5-10 lbs. Most ruckers progress no faster than every 2-4 weeks. Experienced ruckers typically carry 20-35% of their body weight.
Beginners should aim for 2-3 rucks per week to allow for recovery. More active ruckers can go 3-4 times per week. Start with shorter distances (1-2 miles) and build up gradually, especially as you increase weight.
Yes. Rucking is low-impact cardio that delivers a similar heart-rate challenge to running with significantly less vertical impact on your knees and joints. It's an excellent option for people who want high-intensity cardio without the wear and tear of running.
Rucking burns up to 3x more calories than walking at the same pace because the added weight forces your body to work significantly harder. The heavier your load, the higher your calorie burn, making it one of the most efficient fitness workouts available.
The main difference is intent and load. Hiking focuses on distance and terrain with a light pack. Rucking is a workout first; you carry intentional, heavier weight to increase cardiovascular effort and build strength. Purpose-built rucking backpacks like the Ridge Rucking Backpack also keep weight high and tight on your back for efficient load distribution over long distances.
For many people, yes. The Ridge Rucking Backpack is designed with a padded back panel that promotes upright posture. Rucking strengthens your posterior chain (glutes, lower back, and core), which can help address the root cause of desk-posture pain over time. If you have an existing back condition, consult a healthcare provider before starting.
Any stable, supportive athletic shoe works for getting started. As you increase weight and distance, a shoe with good ankle support and cushioning becomes more important. Avoid worn-out sneakers or flat-soled shoes for heavier loads.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack is 21L, sized to be efficient and focused. It fits a ruck weight, water, and your essentials without unnecessary bulk. The 21L volume is the sweet spot for rucking: large enough to be versatile, compact enough to keep weight close to your back where it belongs.
Start by loosening all straps. Put on the pack and tighten the shoulder straps so the pack sits high on your back. If using a hip belt, center it on your hip bones and tighten so it transfers weight off your shoulders. Finally, clip and adjust the sternum strap across your chest for stability. The weight should feel close to your body, not pulling you backward.
The bottom of the Ridge Rucking Backpack should sit above your beltline. If it rests on or below your belt, the weight pulls your lower back backward causing friction and strain. Keep the weight high and tight; this is how military ruckers carry load efficiently over long distances.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack is purpose-built for rucking. It features a dedicated weight pocket that holds plates close to your back for proper load distribution, premium abrasion-resistant materials, reinforced stitching, a padded back panel, and a MOLLE system for attaching accessories. Regular backpacks lack these features and can shift weight in ways that strain your back and break down under heavy loads.
MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) is a standardized webbing system on the exterior of the Ridge Rucking Backpack. It lets you attach compatible accessories including our Rucking Hip Belt, Phone Holder, Reflective Bands, or any standard MOLLE pouches. The system is modular, so you can customize your setup as your rucking evolves.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack is available in Black and Coyote Brown.
Yes. The Ridge Rucking Backpack features an internal hydration sleeve compatible with most standard hydration bladders, plus a tube exit port so you can sip without stopping. This makes it easy to stay hydrated on longer rucks.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack features two dedicated weight compartments: a long compartment and a short compartment. Loaded up, the Ridge Rucking Backpack can carry up to 60LB using one long ruck weight (up to 45LB) plus one short ruck weight (up to 15LB), or up to 90LB with two long ruck weights (up to 45LB each). The reinforced construction keeps the pack stable and structured even under heavy loads.
Yes. The Ridge Rucking Backpack's 21L capacity and clean design work well as a gym bag, commuter bag, or travel carry-on. When you're not rucking, simply remove the weight plate and use it like any other pack.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack is built with premium, abrasion-resistant materials that are water-resistant and handle light rain comfortably. For heavy rain or wet conditions, we recommend using a rain cover or storing sensitive items in a waterproof pouch inside the pack.
Most ruck weights will fit our pockets. Pocket 1 (15.5" x 10.5") fits 2 long ruck weights. Pocket 2 (11" x 8.5") fits one short ruck weight.
Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap for most dirt and grime. For a deeper clean, hand wash with mild detergent and air dry fully before storing. Never machine wash or tumble dry, as this can damage the materials, stitching, and structure of the pack.
Our Ruck Weights feature a corrosion-resistant powder-coat finish. To maximize lifespan: dry the weight after use if it gets wet, store it in a dry location, and avoid prolonged exposure to moisture. If minor surface rust appears, clean with a wire brush and apply a light coat of WD-40.
Our Ruck Weights come in 10LB, 15LB, 20LB, 25LB, 30LB, 35LB, and 45LB. Short profile weights (10LB, 15LB) are compact and fit the standard weight pocket of the Ridge Rucking Backpack. Long profile weights (20LB, 25LB, 30LB, 35LB, 45LB) are larger plates designed for the extended weight compartment.
Short and Long refer to the physical profile of the weight plate. Short weights (10LB and 15LB) are more compact, fitting the standard weight pocket. Long weights (20LB, 25LB, 30LB, 35LB, 45LB) are larger plates for the extended compartment. Choose your weight based on your fitness level; beginners should start with a Short 10LB or 15LB.
Yes, our Ruck Weights are specifically designed to fit the Ridge 21L Rucking Backpack. Short weights (10LB, 15LB) fit the standard weight compartment; Long weights (20LB-30LB) fit the extended compartment. The weight sits flat against your back for optimal load distribution.
Yes. The Ridge Rucking Backpack has two dedicated weight compartments, allowing you to load 1 short and 1 long or 2 long weight plates.
A padded hip belt transfers a significant portion of your pack's weight from your shoulders to your hips, where your body carries load much more efficiently. This reduces upper back and shoulder fatigue, improves posture, and makes longer or heavier rucks significantly more comfortable. We recommend a hip belt for any ruck over 30 minutes or heavier than 20LB.
The Rucking Hip Belt attaches via the MOLLE webbing on the sides of the Ridge Rucking Backpack. Thread the belt's MOLLE straps through the webbing loops in a weave pattern and pull tight to secure. Once attached, position the padded sections on your hip bones and adjust the buckle for a snug fit. It removes just as easily when not in use.
Yes. The Rucking Hip Belt features padded construction to protect your hips from pressure points during extended rucks. The padding is firm enough to support meaningful weight transfer without feeling bulky.
The Rucking Hip Belt is Standard size with adjustable straps to accommodate a wide range of body sizes. The adjustable buckle system lets you dial in the fit so the belt sits on your hip bones, not your waist, for proper weight transfer.
Yes. The hip belt attaches and detaches from the Ridge Rucking Backpack's MOLLE webbing easily, so you can use it only when needed. Many ruckers skip the hip belt for short or light rucks and add it for longer distances or heavier loads.
The Complete Rucking Bundle includes the Ridge 21L Rucking Backpack, a Ruck Weight (your choice of 10LB, 15LB, 20LB, 25LB, 30LB, 35LB, or 45LB), and the Rucking Hip Belt. It has everything you need to start rucking from day one. Available in Black and Coyote Brown.
Both bundles include the Ridge 21L Rucking Backpack and your choice of Ruck Weight. The Complete Bundle also includes the Rucking Hip Belt, which transfers load off your shoulders and onto your hips for longer, more comfortable rucks. If you plan to ruck regularly or push heavier weights, the Complete Bundle is the better long-term investment.
Yes. Both bundles let you select your weight size (10LB, 15LB, 20LB, 25LB, 30LB, 35LB, or 45LB) and backpack color (Black or Coyote Brown) at checkout. Not sure where to start? We recommend the 10LB option for beginners.
Absolutely. Our bundles give you everything you need to start rucking immediately: no research required, no guessing about compatibility. Both the Complete and Essentials Bundles save you money compared to purchasing items individually, and all components are designed to work together out of the box.
Yes! The Ridge Rucking Backpack included in every bundle is MOLLE-compatible, so you can add accessories like the Phone Holder, Reflective Bands, or Hip Belt (if not already included) at any time. Build out your setup as your rucking progresses.
