FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the Ridge Rucking Backpack

Rucking is the simple act of walking with a weighted backpack. Originally a military training staple, it has become one of the most popular and effective fitness workouts, burning up to 3x more calories than walking, building functional strength in your back, glutes, and core, all with low joint impact.
Beginners should aim for 2-3 rucks per week to allow for recovery. More active ruckers can go 3-4 times per week. Start with shorter distances (1-2 miles) and build up gradually, especially as you increase weight.
Yes. Rucking is low-impact cardio that delivers a similar heart-rate challenge to running with significantly less vertical impact on your knees and joints. It's an excellent option for people who want high-intensity cardio without the wear and tear of running.
Rucking burns up to 3x more calories than walking at the same pace because the added weight forces your body to work significantly harder. The heavier your load, the higher your calorie burn, making it one of the most efficient fitness workouts available.
The main difference is intent and load. Hiking focuses on distance and terrain with a light pack. Rucking is a workout first; you carry intentional, heavier weight to increase cardiovascular effort and build strength. Purpose-built rucking backpacks like the Ridge Rucking Backpack also keep weight high and tight on your back for efficient load distribution over long distances.
For many people, yes. The Ridge Rucking Backpack is designed with a padded back panel that promotes upright posture. Rucking strengthens your posterior chain (glutes, lower back, and core), which can help address the root cause of desk-posture pain over time. If you have an existing back condition, consult a healthcare provider before starting.
Any stable, supportive athletic shoe works for getting started. As you increase weight and distance, a shoe with good ankle support and cushioning becomes more important. Avoid worn-out sneakers or flat-soled shoes for heavier loads.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack is 21L, sized to be efficient and focused. It fits a ruck weight, water, and your essentials without unnecessary bulk. The 21L volume is the sweet spot for rucking: large enough to be versatile, compact enough to keep weight close to your back where it belongs.
Start by loosening all straps. Put on the pack and tighten the shoulder straps so the pack sits high on your back. If using a hip belt, center it on your hip bones and tighten so it transfers weight off your shoulders. Finally, clip and adjust the sternum strap across your chest for stability. The weight should feel close to your body, not pulling you backward.
The bottom of the Ridge Rucking Backpack should sit above your beltline. If it rests on or below your belt, the weight pulls your lower back backward causing friction and strain. Keep the weight high and tight; this is how military ruckers carry load efficiently over long distances.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack is purpose-built for rucking. It features a dedicated weight pocket that holds plates close to your back for proper load distribution, premium abrasion-resistant materials, reinforced stitching, a padded back panel, and a MOLLE system for attaching accessories. Regular backpacks lack these features and can shift weight in ways that strain your back and break down under heavy loads.
MOLLE (Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment) is a standardized webbing system on the exterior of the Ridge Rucking Backpack. It lets you attach compatible accessories including our Rucking Hip Belt, Phone Holder, Reflective Bands, or any standard MOLLE pouches. The system is modular, so you can customize your setup as your rucking evolves.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack is available in Black and Coyote Brown.
Yes. The Ridge Rucking Backpack features an internal hydration sleeve compatible with most standard hydration bladders, plus a tube exit port so you can sip without stopping. This makes it easy to stay hydrated on longer rucks.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack features two dedicated weight compartments: a long compartment and a short compartment. Loaded up, the Ridge Rucking Backpack can carry up to 60LB using one long ruck weight (up to 45LB) plus one short ruck weight (up to 15LB), or up to 90LB with two long ruck weights (up to 45LB each). The reinforced construction keeps the pack stable and structured even under heavy loads.
Yes. The Ridge Rucking Backpack's 21L capacity and clean design work well as a gym bag, commuter bag, or travel carry-on. When you're not rucking, simply remove the weight plate and use it like any other pack.
The Ridge Rucking Backpack is built with premium, abrasion-resistant materials that are water-resistant and handle light rain comfortably. For heavy rain or wet conditions, we recommend using a rain cover or storing sensitive items in a waterproof pouch inside the pack.
Most ruck weights will fit our pockets. Pocket 1 (15.5" x 10.5") fits 2 long ruck weights. Pocket 2 (11" x 8.5") fits one short ruck weight.
Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap for most dirt and grime. For a deeper clean, hand wash with mild detergent and air dry fully before storing. Never machine wash or tumble dry, as this can damage the materials, stitching, and structure of the pack.
